Evolution

I just realized that theres more than a year since I started learning web design. I didn’t even celebrate
I’ve started with the “Total Learning” DVD and continued with the tutsplus network. Mostly psd.tutsplus and vector.tutsplus.com. I did a lot of tutorials and learned a lot from the community. I have to say that smashingmagazine.com and psd.tutsplus.com are the most valuable resources in my development as a web designer.
When I bought the smashing book it was like injecting nanites full of information into my bloodstream. I still use it as a guide whenever I start a new project.
It thought me about user interface, color schemes, typography, project management and a lot more.
I’d like to think that I’ve passed the beginner stage and I’m going towards medium-advanced web design.
I have a few projects that I’m looking forward to release. In the span of a few months I’ve been: web designer, UI desiner, UX designer, concept designer, software UI and UX designer and finally Project Manager.
I think I will be able to release design related content on the project that I’ve done concept design for. But that will probably happen in about a month or so.
In the meanwhile I’m doing UI/UX design and Project management.
Will update more info next week.
From Windows to Linux.

I finally have had the opportunity to install Ubuntu 10.04 on a new HDD. I was somewhat surprised that some of the things, that worked fine and dandy with the first install, don’t really work so well anymore.
Most people ask me why did I switch to linux? I tell them: no spyware, malware, viruses (they are theoretically possible) and it’s a lot more secure.
One of the other main reasons I’ve switched to linux is because I might get a promotion in terms of project management and I wanted an environment that protected me.
To tell you the truth, if photoshop ran, I’d say goodbye to windows.
The projects are going well and most of the work flow is done. I will update in about a weak, maybe with screenshots.
Creativity!

Creativity is the interaction of different disciplinary ways of seeing things.
This quote belongs to Sir Ken Robinson. At first sight it’s pretty abstract and that’s because it is taken out of context.
I recently saw a couple of short, 20 minutes each, videos where Sir Ken Robinson talks about a revolution in the education system, creativity and intelligence. He says that in order to be creative, first, you have to allow yourself to make mistakes.
If you are not prepared to be wrong then you will not be creative.
Doodling With Burn and Dodge. – Photoshop CS5 Experiment
Posted by admin at 4:06 pm
In an earlier post I was experimenting my drawing/doodling skills, using the tablet, in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Today, I experimented with the Dodge and Burn tool. The point was to create shades and ripples.
In the end I figured out a new technique that shows interesting effects:
I started with this:
Then I selected the burned tool and played around a little with the brush settings. I created some deep shadows and then added a little light with the dodge tool.
After a few tens of minutes the result was this:
First thing that comes into mind is muscles, tendons, organic material. After a few retouches I called it a finished experiment:
Maybe I’ll make a tutorial named “How to create organic material in Photoshop CS5″

How to make folded corners in Photoshop CS5
Posted by admin at 12:36 pm
As I promised, today I’m going to show you how to build folded – sharp and rounded – corners in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Before starting, make sure you have Auto-Select On and set to Layer. (Top-left)
Let’s Begin:
Start Photoshop CS5 and make a new document, let’s say 960 x 900 Px.
Step 1:
Draw a rectangular shape by pressing the letter ” U ” and then just hold and drag your cursor to make the shape:
Step 2:
Now using the same process, make a new shape like the picture below (make sure to change the color):
Update

I was going to post a tutorial today, but I got cought up with work. Some my friends keep asking me for beginner level photoshop advice.
So tomorrow I will show how to make shapes look like they are folded.
I am going to show both sharp and rounded corners. Later I plan to show you how you achieve this using css3.
How to get new ideas
Posted by admin at 7:27 am
My current task/project is to redesign a full brand that includes business partners and has a suite of products. Boy, I find this being a tough job. I have a million ideas and slowly run through them and only implement like 2 or 3 and then I’m like a blank book.
In order to take the edge off and clear my mind, I draw. OK, I doodle
This is just a vectorized piece of a larger doodle that initially said ” Type is Mix”.
It’s been a busy week! At work I have this big design and thinking project and at home I have to finish a project from my freelancing big client. I was coding all weekend.
Hope that soon I will be able to showcase what I have been working on.
The Experiment
Posted by admin at 3:13 pm
I tried today to do something totally new.
I like to build photo realistic and detailed layouts but until now I didn”t try to do anything real in fear of screwing it up.
You know how they say: “If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again”, and so I did.
In a recent project I had this idea to showcase the brands products in a museum gallery kind of way. With glass casings and lights and all of that.
That didn’t really work out because its supposed to be a corporate layout and it didn’t fit.
But today I got the change to try this little experiment. Below you have what I got so far:
It still has a lot of work needed to be done, but I hope I will be able to finish it and showcase it in my portfolio.
